==================================
1. Create Simple Infographics
==================================

You can’t go anywhere on the Internet these days without seeing
eye-popping infographics.

Wouldn’t you love to be able to afford to pay an artist several
thousands dollars to create one of those giant, fancy-schmantzy
infographics for your next PR campaign? I would. But it isn’t in
the budget.

So I’m doing the next best thing. I’m learning how to create
simple infographics myself.

Pie charts. Doodles. Flow charts. Bar charts. Maps. Word clouds.
Graphs. Those are only a few of many types of infographics you
can create to dress up your website, blog, press releases, press
kit or online pressroom. You don’t even have to be an expert at
Photoshop or have artistic talent.

I’m experimenting with dozens of free and super-cheap tools, and
I can save you hours of time.

Join me during the webinar “How to Easily Create Free or
Inexpensive Infographics” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time on
Thursday, May 24. I’ll show you what I’ve created and I’ll share
lots of tips to make the process easy.

Note: I am NOT a techie. And I don’t expect you to be either. So
I am purposely keeping this very simple.

Register here:

http://www.publicityhound.com/publicity-products/marketing-
tapes/infographics.htm

Have you created your own infographics? If so, email me with the
links and explain what tool you used. I might include them in my
webinar.

================================
2. Facebook Webinar Today
================================

Stop struggling with Facebook.

Register for Mari Smith’s webinar at 3 p.m. Eastern Time today on
“10 Essential Money-Making Facebook Techie Tips.” If the time is
inconvenient, register anyway because she’s recording it and
she’ll send you the replay link.

In conjunction with the webinar, she’s sponsoring “The Great
Facebook Timeline Cover Image Contest.” Upload a Timeline cover
image from either your personal profile or, ideally, from your
fan page.

Anyone can vote for their favorite entry. The winner, chosen from
the top 10 entries with the most votes, will receive a Facebook
Marketing Makeover worth $1,000.

Read all about the contest, and register for today’s call at
http://budurl.com/facebookmakeover.

===============================
3. Pitch a Guest Blog Post
===============================

When you plan your summer vacation, remember that bloggers are
planning, too.

That’s why this is the perfect time to pitch a guest blog post.
In your pitch, remind the blogger that your content would be
ideal for them while they’re on vacation.

Publicity expert Bob Baker passes along this valuable tip if you
see a blog that would be perfect for your post, but there’s no
way to contact the blogger. Just Google the blogger’s name like
this: “Joan Stewart on Twitter.” Once you know their Twitter
name, you can contact the blogger there. Bob, an expert on how
bands and musicians can get publicity, is @MrBuzzFactor and
shares great tips. Follow him.

4. Hound Video
that’s taking the UK by storm, have won ITV’s “Britain’s Got
1. Celebrity Doodles
==================================

Betty White drew a picture of her fluffy dog.

Sarah Jessica Parker doodled an 8 x 10 picture of herself.

Roseanna Arquette send a “three pack” of doodles, which were
nicely framed and placed on the auction block.

For five years, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has relied on
celebrity doodles to raise money and drum up publicity.

Watch the video at my blog where Becky Gomes, a member of the
board of directors, shows you the doodles that have attracted the
most attention and money. http://publicityhound.net/?p=11227

It’s a fund-raiser almost any group can duplicate.

2. Win a Facebook Makeover

I sent you a heads-up email earlier in the week to let you know
about the free webinar that Mari Smith is hosting on “10

In conjunction with the webinar, she’s sponsoring “The Great
Facebook Timeline Cover Image Contest.” Upload a Timeline cover
image from either your personal profile or, ideally, from your

Anyone can vote for their favorite entry. The winner, chosen from
the top 10 entries with the most votes, will receive a Facebook
Marketing Makeover worth $1,000.

Read all about the contest, and then sign up for Tuesday’s free
webinar at the bottom of the page at
1. Celebrate Employees’ Milestones
==================================

What do you do when two of your employees have lost more than 200
pounds combined?

You celebrate with a giant party that doubles as a wellness
clinic. Invite the entire community, tie it to a fund-raiser for
the local food pantry, and set a goal of collecting 200 pounds of
food.

That’s what my local library is doing in Port Washington, Wis.,
this Saturday when it honors two librarians who each have lost
more than 100 pounds. What a brilliant idea!

Read about it at my blog at http://publicityhound.net/?p=11201
where I’ve also given you five other ideas for sponsoring clever
special events.

================================
2. Manage Your SM Profiles
================================

When I was answering a question at Quora.com recently, I noticed
that I never created a profile. Yikes!

That means that if someone liked my answer and wanted to know
more about me, they wouldn’t know that I’m a publicity expert, or
where to find me.

Yesterday, I saw a fabulous tip from Peg Fitzpatrick, aka
@PegFitzpatrick on Twitter. She suggests keeping all the links to
your social media profiles in one place. Makes sense. If you’ve
written a new book, started a coaching program or changed jobs,
you can find all your profiles in one easy place and edit them
quickly.

The best place I can think of to keep all these links is in your
Google profile, which lets you create a long list of links to
other websites and social media profiles. If you don’t have one
yet, create it at http://profiles.google.com

===============================
3. Use Pinterest to Teach
===============================

If you’re on Pinterest, don’t just create boards that feature
pretty pictures.

Create boards that teach your target audience how to do
something. I created a board at
http://pinterest.com/publicityhound/best-ways-to-get-free-
publicity/ on the “Best Ways to Get Free Publicity.” Almost all
14 photos link back to an old blog post–a clever way to push new
traffic to older content.

What old blog posts, articles or videos do you have that you can
use to create a teaching board?

If you’re not using Pinterest yet, you’re missing a valuable
source of traffic. I show you how to get started, step-by-step,
in the webinar replay of “How to Use Pinterest to Generate
Clicks, Traffic, Links, Leads and Sales” at
http://www.publicityhound.com/publicity-products/marketing-
1. Bad Pitches: Are You Guilty?
==================================

Here’s what really rankles journalists about bad pitches:

–People addressing them by a wrong first name.

–Spin. Lots and lots of spin.

–Pitches sent from an AOL or Hotmail account which also sends
the message, “I’m cheap.”

–Never-ending follow-ups.

–Misspelling the name of the journalist’s media outlet.

Read more about bad pitches, and see if you’re guilty as charged:
http://blog.muckrack.com/post/22254773337/what-journalists-really-
think-about-bad-pr-pitches

And read five more tips if you’re pitching by phone:
http://publicityhound.net/5-important-tips-for-pitching-
journalists-by-phone/

================================
2. Create Free Infographics
================================

You can’t tweet or surf the web anymore without stumbling upon an
eye-popping infographic.

Most of the better ones are time-consuming and expensive.

But I spent just a few minutes at Visual.ly at http://visual.ly/
and created a neat infographic that compares my Twitter stats
with those of Oprah.

Take a look at what I produced at
http://publicityhound.net/?p=11156, and think of ways you can use
Visual.ly in a publicity campaign

4. Hound Video

==================================
1. Trade Show Publicity
==================================

The next time you go to a trade show as a speaker, vendor or just
to walk the floor, look for all the publicity opportunities right
under your nose.

Bigger shows often have a press room where reporters and bloggers
can write and file stories. You won’t be allowed inside, but you
can hang around outside the door and introduce yourself to
journalists coming and going.

If you’re exhibiting, you have even more opportunities for
publicity. But the real work begins eight to 10 weeks before the
show, when you ask the show’s PR staff for a preregistered media
list. Contact reporters and bloggers relevant to your industry
and ask to make an appointment with them at the show to introduce
them to your new product or service, or just for a getting-to-
know-you session. Their schedules fill up quickly.

You can access a free White Paper from Business Wire that serves
as a checklist for the many other things you need to do before,
during and after the show. Download it at
http://bw.newshq.businesswire.com/white-paper/guide-trade-show-
publicity

================================
2. “May I Record This Interview?”
================================

Don’t freak out when a reporter or blogger asks if it’s OK to
flip on the recorder during an interview.

This actually works in your favor because, with a recording,
there’s no excuse for inaccurate facts or quotes.

If the reporter records the interview, you should, too, so you
have a permanent copy of it.

Here’s a list of six voice-recorder apps for the iPhone:
http://www.iphoneness.com/iphone-apps/best-voice-recorder-iphone-
apps/

If you have a different type of phone, do a Google search for an
app for your brand.

“May I record this interview?” is one of 27 questions a reporter
might ask you. I’ve included them all, explained how you should
answer them, and noted which ones are trick questions, in my
updated “Special Report #2: Questions You Can Expect Reporters to
Ask During an Interview.” Order it at
http://www.publicityhound.com/publicity-products/reports.html

The best surprise is no surprise.

===============================
3. Sell Blog Sponsorships
===============================

Are you letting companies sponsor specific blog posts, certain
blog categories or your entire blog?

If not, consider it.

There’s no formula that I know of on how to price this. A lot
depends on the kind of traffic you pull. So know your stats. And
experiment with pricing.

This is just one idea from my webinar on “27 Ways to Monetize
Your Blog” which explains everything from “tip jars” at your blog
to selling blog content as a product.

Read more about the kinds of tactics it includes at
http://www.publicityhound.com/publicity-products/marketing-
tapes/howtomonetizeyourblog.htm

===============================
4. Hound Video
===============================

If you missed seeing it live at the White House Press
Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, you’ve got to watch the
“ad from one of these outside groups” that President Obama
referred to. Pundits of all political stripes gave this “two paws
up” as the highlight of the dinner.

1. 101 Volunteer Recruitment Ideas
==================================

Need volunteers for your nonprofit or community group?

–Skip the expensive ads in local newspapers and pitch a story
idea about what your group is doing. Mention that you’re
recruiting volunteers.

–Place items in local church bulletins.

–Contact local real estate agents who have their own newsletters
and ask them to include a blurb.

–Post flyers at local ethnic food stores if you need volunteers
who speak a foreign language.

–Post on Craigslist.org, Idealist.org, VolunteerMatch.org,
neighborhood listserves, AARP’s Create the Good at
http://createthegood.org/sso/required/post-opportunity Serv.gov,
and at local universities. All are free.

These ideas are on the list of 101 Volunteer Recruitment Secrets,
shared by members of the VolunteerMatch community, at

http://media.volunteermatch.org/docs/101Secrets/VolunteerMatch_10

1Secrets.pdf

Combine these tips with other strategies from Sandy Rees who was
a guest during the webinar “Failproof Publicity Tips for Cash-
strapped Nonprofits to Raise Money, Recruit Volunteers & Promote
a Worthy Cause” at
http://www.publicityhound.com/publicity-products/marketing-
tapes/nonprofitpublicity.htm

================================
2. Live Remotes from a Festival
================================

Thanks to Publicity Hound Sophie Wajsman of Melbourne, Australia,
for piggybacking onto my idea, in Tuesday’s newsletter, to let
the local TV meteorologist know about a local special event
you’re hosting by mentioning it on his or her Facebook page.

Sophie has an even better idea:

“A few years ago, I was doing the PR for a local flower festival
and invited one of the TV stations to do their weather forecast
directly from the festival. They did, and it was very
successful…I also approached an FM radio station, popular with
the younger demographic, to do an outdoor broadcast from the
festival.”

Brilliant.

This is called a live remote, and you may or may not have to pay
for it, depending on how often it’s broadcast. This is one of the
hundreds of tips that Debra J. Schmidt and I shared during the
training tool we produced for PR pros and do-it-yourselfers on
“How to Plan & Promote Sizzling Special Events.” Learn more about
it at http://publicityhound.com/publicity/promote.html

==================================
1. Pitch Events on Facebook Pages
==================================

Here’s a very quick, very easy way to generate TV publicity for a
special event in your town.

When I was in Los Angeles last week, I was watching “Good
Morning, America” in the hotel while preparing for a business
meeting. Between segments, ABC cut to the local news and weather
on ABC7. During his forecast, weather guy Garth Kemp reminded
viewers about the California Poppy Festival in Lancaster that
Saturday and Sunday. He mentioned that the weather would be
perfect.

How did he know about the festival? He said that somebody told
him about it on his Facebook page. I’ll bet that took all of
about 60 seconds. Many TV meteorologists, reporters, anchors,
sports reporters and others have Facebook pages, a perfect place
to pitch story ideas.

Steal this idea the next time your group is sponsoring an outdoor
event, or even an indoor event during the winter where people can
stay warm and cozy.

The weather happens 365 days a year and it’s one of the most
overlooked ways to generate publicity.

================================
2. Help Wikipedia Improve
================================

Thanks to Publicity Hound Holly Grande who read last week’s item
on the many inaccuracies in Wikipedia entries and tipped us off
to CREWE, the Facebook group of 300 people who have gathered to
discuss Wikipedia, its editing policy and what can be done to
ensure that entries are accurate, relevant and up to date.

CREWE stands for Corporate Representatives for Ethical Wikipedia
Engagement and you can find the Facebook group at
https://www.facebook.com/groups/crewe.group/

It’s comprised of Wikipedians, PR people, academics, students and
others.

=================================
3. How to Respond to a Media Lead
=================================

The free and paid services that feed you leads from journalists
who are looking for sources should be a staple of your publicity
campaign.

But you must know exactly how to respond to a media lead. If a
health reporter for USA Today is looking for sources who suffer
from depression, and you want that reporter to write about your
company’s latest study on which foods cause depression, do not
pitch that story or the report could blackball you forever.

You can respond only if you’re a perfect fit for the story
mentioned in the lead. Dan Janal’s new book “Reporters Are
Looking for You” guides you step-by-step through the entire
process of how to respond to a media lead and form strong
relationships with reporters.

Dan has graciously agreed to offer the book free to anyone in my
course called “On Target Publicity: How to Find, Capture &
Convert Your Target Market.” I’ll present the second webinar in
the series this Thursday, April 26, and we’ll explain how to find
your target market on the social media sites, and how to make it
easy for them to find you.

I have only two more openings in the course, and if you register
today, you can access the video replay of last week’s session on
how to set goals and identify your target market. Learn all the
details here: http://www.publicityhound.com/ontargetpublicity.htm

==================================
1. Wikipedia’s Many Errors
==================================

Here’s another reason not to rely on Wikipedia as a trusted
source of knowledge for anything.

A new study published in the Public Relations Journal shows that
a stunning 60 percent of articles about specific companies
contained factual errors.

The research was conducted by Marcia W. DiStaso, Ph.D., co-chair
of PRSA’s National Research Committee and an assistant professor
of public relations at Penn State University. She surveyed 1,284
PR professionals to find out how they use Wikipedia or correct
errors they find there.

“It does not surprise me that so many Wikipedia entries contain
factual errors,” said DiStaso. “What is surprising, however, is
that 25 percent of survey respondents indicated they are not
familiar with the Wikipedia articles for their company or
clients. At some point most, if not all, companies will determine
they need to change something in their Wikipedia entries. Without
clear, consistent rules from Wikipedia regarding how factual
corrections can be made this will be a very difficult learning
process for public relations professionals.”

Wikipedia’s editing process is so cumbersome, that some people
just don’t bother. Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, told the
Associated Press last fall that Wikipedia is losing the crowd
that keeps it updated. The typical profile of a contributor is “a
26-year-old geeky male” who moves on to their ventures and leaves
the website.

Administrators are working to simplify the way users can
contribute and edit materials. Finally.

If you’re in PR, or you do your own publicity, do you use
Wikipedia? Do you find it difficult to use? Do you regularly
monitor it? Have you tried to submit a Wikipedia entry for your
client but it got rejected? Share your story at my blog at
http://publicityhound.net/?p=11075

================================
2. Winning Email Subject Line
================================

If you aren’t using email to promote your business or nonprofit,
you’re leaving money on the table.

But you must know how to write an enticing subject line that
forces readers to open it.

Copyblogger has chosen the winner of its email subject line
contest: “Do your landing pages pass this test?”

I wasn’t bowled over by that. But I’ll admit, it would make me
open the email. It’s straightforward and explains exactly what
the email is about.

You can see the more than 400 entries at
http://www.copyblogger.com/meclabs-winners/

==================================
1. Take Advantage of Influencers
==================================

Find an A-list blogger to test your product and write about it
for their blog, and your publicity campaign can be off to a
roaring start.

Convince an influential author with a huge following to tweet
about your book, and it can result in a glut of orders.

But where do you find influential people? And how do you know the
difference between somebody who’s popular and somebody who’s
truly influential? An influential person is often in a position
to tell others what to do and actually convinces them to do it.

I’ll explain 11 places to find them during the five-webinar
series that kicks off at 3 p.m. Eastern Time tomorrow–Tuesday,
April 17–on “On Target Publicity: How to Find, Capture & Convert
Your Target Market.” Influencers, by the way, should be part of
EVERY Publicity Hound’s target market.

If you register, you’ll be able to watch me use your own target
market(s) as examples throughout the webinar series.

Want a taste? Watch the replay of Thursday’s webinar on “The 3-
Part Formula for Finding & Capturing Your Target Market.” You can
download it at
http://www.PublicityHound.com/ontargetpublicityvideo.htm

Or go directly to the page where you can see the full description
of the program and all the cool stuff that comes with it:
http://www.publicityhound.com/ontargetpublicity.htm

Deadline for registering is at the start of today’s session but
only if slots are still available. Because this program includes
personal consulting and a private forum where I’ll be answering
questions throughout the entire five weeks, I’m limiting the
number of people who buy the course so I can give you the very
best personal attention. So act now.

Register at http://www.publicityhound.com/ontargetpublicity.htm

================================
2. Get in Touch with Ellen
================================

Oprah’s new show on cable is tanking, and the news is equally
grim for O Magazine. In the first quarter of this year,
advertising pages were down a whopping 24 percent. O was the
biggest loser among women’s magazines.

Enter “Ellen” whose website has 20 ways you can get onto her
show. Most are of the silly “send us pics of your misspelled tattoos”
variety. But it might be worth checking out “Let Bethenny
Frankel Know What It’s Like to Be You.” If you have a job or
hobby that’s the complete opposite of the reality show star, and
you’d love to have her walk a day in your shoes, contact the
producers.

Check it all out here:
http://ellen.warnerbros.com/show/#Getting%20in%20Touch%20with%20Ellen

=================================
3. Now THIS is a Publicity Stunt
=================================

If you were walking in the middle of your town square and saw a
waist-high post with a red button on the top that said “Push to
add drama,” would you push it?

A Belgian TV channel staged a very clever prank which literally
left bystanders agape in astonishment. Thanks to Publicity Hound
Sophie Wajsman for sharing the video of this amazing publicity
stunt:

==================================
1. Don’t Wait to Target a Market
==================================

The time to start targeting a market is not a month before you’re
launching a publicity campaign.

That’s what too many people do.

Then, when they send a press release or a marketing message, it’s
usually “I want to sell you something.”

The right way to do it is to start a minimum of six months before
you’re ready to launch or, preferably one year.

You need that much time to research your target market which
includes journalists. You also need to search for likely
customers online and offline, help them solve their problems for
free, and earn their trust and loyalty BEFORE you publicize
something and ask for the sale.

I explained the three critical steps during the webinar I hosted
Thursday on “The 3-Part Formula for Finding & Capturing Your
Target Market.” If you missed it, you can find the replay here:

http://www.PublicityHound.com/ontargetpublicityvideo.htm

================================
2. Your Reach on Pinterest
================================

Thanks to Publicity Hound Anne Roos for sharing a helpful tool
called PinReach, a free program that provides analytics and
tabulates your overall score and reach on Pinterest.

You can find it at http://www.PinReach.com.

Not pinning yet? Pinterest is the third largest social media
site, and people who pin correctly are reporting it’s a fast, fun
way to share, publicize and sell.
